PAL Playwrights Labs
Nick Hytner asks for new plays that will fill the two large houses in London's National Theatre. But where are these substantial, large-scale works going to come from? For years, UK playwrights have been encouraged to write for small casts and studio spaces so their work can be performed. Repertory theatres are reluctant to commit their main houses to new plays.
PAL believes the time is right to initiate an international experiment in confident writing for theatre for all ages and for all spaces. PAL wants to challenge writers to experiment in writing the future classic, big, beefy play.
After six successful years of PAL Playwrights Labs for New Writing for Younger Audiences (1996-2001), PAL would now like to encourage exciting, new and established writers to address the big dilemmas, the huge, soaring subjects which require impeccable research, outstanding artistic bravery, a large stage and a sizeable cast.
