An If Not You Who Else Lab?– ©Susan Benn
IF NOT YOU WHO ELSE? During 2011 PAL designed and led a non-residential 5 month Lab. This is a new venture for PAL both in form and in focus. INYWE? is a structured collaboration between artists, young people (aged 17-30) and their chosen communities.
Their aim was to make art which builds community awareness and participation; and to help young people find a lasting confidence in their individual capacity to change their own lives and to make a difference.
The Lab was designed to encourage and facilitate community engagement and to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, self-assurance and access to funding streams to undertake their own projects for meaningful community benefit. The Lab also aimed to build their employability and career management skills to equip them to find further work, study or volunteering.
The initial three-day non-residential Lab was held at the Siobhan Davies Studios in July 2011. The work continued over seven further day-long Labs through to November 2011
I found the project a life changing experience. We rapidly became a family sharing ideas about how we could make a positive impact on the wider community. The process allowed us all a great deal of personal development, I learnt how to integrate better in a team environment. This experience has given me a great deal of self-belief that I can make a positive impact on the world around me.
