Portfolio
PAL’s work started in the performing arts and has gradually diversified to embrace many different disciplines and professions. At present our work falls into three broad strands, Labs for Artists, Labs in Learning and Screen-based Labs. See a timeline of all Labs since 1989.
Labs for Artists
All PAL Labs have artists from all disciplines at their heart. We offer talented artists opportunities to challenge and extend their own practice by working in unexpected contexts, with people they might not otherwise encounter. In addition, our Labs for Artists strand focuses specifically on arts practice.
A major element of this strand is the Artist as Leader programme, piloted in Scotland in 2007-08. This programme explores cultural leadership by artists rather than arts managers and has already stimulated positive change in cultural, social and political policy through the making of art.
Labs in Learning
Since 2001, PAL’s Labs in Learning have given teachers, educators, curriculum developers and policymakers time and space to challenge their attitudes to their own and others’ practice, to explore and try out inter-disciplinary and whole curriculum working and to be inspired by a new and unexpected network of professionals.
PAL’s Labs in Learning show how teachers and other educators, working collaboratively with artists and other specialists, can produce a more inspiring and effective experience of learning for young people. Read more.
Screen-based Labs
Since 1990, PAL has been producing screenwriting and script development Labs for professional writers, including those with a track record in other literary genres looking to write for the screen. This work continues and attracts commissions from film schools and from production companies.
In addition, we are currently focusing on the development of high quality cross-platform media culture for young people in the UK and overseas.
