February 1996 | Playwrights Lab

New Writing for Younger Audiences

"The Lab has been a burst of energies, possibilities, excitements and creativity. Brilliant." April de Angelis

Having been a participant in PAL’s first ever Opera and Music Theatre Lab (1991), April de Angelis joined the 1996 Playwrights Lab as a mentor.

“As a writer myself I found the mixture of approaches, styles and themes stimulating and challenging…Because it was a Lab centred on ‘writing for young people’ I felt that an extraordinarily rich imaginative territory was opened up – maybe because each writer has to contact their child or adolescent in order to sharpen their sense of who their audience will be.  I found this is a wonderful thing to witness from the outside and I spent a lot of the week hoping it would rub off on me.”
